Fly.io ditched HashiCorp's Consul because it couldn't hack their need for global replication across hundreds of nodes with sub-second speed. So, they built their own cool system called Corrosion, crafted with Rust and SQLite, to do the job.
Corrosion uses clever tech like CRDTs and the SWIM gossip protocol to sync machine states globally in under a second. This trick helps them avoid a central leader bottleneck, keeping their distributed systems super speedy and resilient.
